Do I Need Vaccines or Health Precautions to Visit the San Blas Islands?
Traveling to the San Blas Islands is low-risk when it comes to health and safety. The region is remote, naturally protected, and doesn’t require any special medical precautions for most travelers.
No required vaccinations or COVID tests
You don’t need to show proof of vaccination or take a COVID test to visit San Blas. The Guna Yala region remains open to healthy travelers, and there are no current entry restrictions related to health status.
Malaria and other tropical illnesses
There have been no recent cases of malaria in the San Blas region, and it is not considered a malaria-risk zone. Taking preventive medication is not required, though you can always consult with your doctor if you’re traveling to other parts of Panama before or after your trip.
Basic health recommendations:
- Use mosquito repellent, especially in the early morning and evening
- Pack any personal medications you may need (there are no pharmacies on the islands)
- Stay hydrated, especially during hotter months
- Bring reef-safe sunscreen to protect your skin and the environment
Licensed tour operators only
Access to Guna Yala is regulated. Only approved, licensed operators like Sea San Blas can bring travelers into the territory. This helps ensure guest safety, environmental protection, and respect for local regulations.
We work closely with Guna authorities and local guides to make sure all trips follow current health and safety standards — so you can enjoy your visit with total peace of mind.
