How Many Islands Make Up the San Blas Archipelago?
The San Blas Archipelago — also known as Guna Yala — is made up of more than 365 islands and cays, one for each day of the year. However, only about 45 of these islands are inhabited or have any infrastructure for visitors.
The rest remain untouched — small, palm-lined dots scattered across turquoise waters, completely undeveloped and protected by the Guna people.
Of the inhabited islands:
- Some are home to local Guna communities
- Others are used for eco-tourism, hosting cabins, restaurants, or small day-trip facilities
- A few serve as private islands for more exclusive stays
Want to explore more than just one island?
All Sea San Blas trips include visits to multiple islands, giving you a chance to experience the diversity of the region — from culturally rich communities to remote sandbanks perfect for snorkeling.
