Is There Phone Signal, Internet, or Electricity on the San Blas Islands?
The San Blas Islands are remote and intentionally off-grid — that’s part of their charm. But we know staying connected (at least a little) matters, especially when planning logistics or sharing your adventure. Here's what to expect:
Internet Access (Wi-Fi)
There is no Wi-Fi available on the islands. If you need to check in online or upload photos, we recommend doing so before your trip while you're still in Panama City. Many travelers use this as a chance to fully unplug and enjoy the natural beauty of the islands without digital distractions.
Phone Signal and SIM Cards
Some islands have limited cell service, but it varies depending on your exact location and your mobile carrier. The best coverage is typically found with Tigo or Mas Móvil SIM cards, which can be purchased in Panama City before your trip. Even then, signal strength can be unpredictable, and data is usually slow.
- Tigo and Mas Móvil work best in the region
- eSIMs and international roaming plans often don’t work in Guna Yala
- Don’t rely on having service for calls or messages once you arrive
Electricity Access
Electricity on the islands is usually provided by solar panels or small generators. Most cabins have basic lighting and a shared outlet area where you can charge phones or power banks during certain hours — usually in the evening.
- Bring a fully charged power bank
- Avoid bringing electronics that need frequent charging
- Outlets may be limited, so it’s a good idea to bring a multi-port USB adapter
The islands are about disconnecting — not just from the internet, but from stress. Just let friends or family know in advance that you’ll be off-grid for a day or two, and embrace it.
